The story begins on Epiphany (6 January), 1482, the day of the Feast of Fools in Paris, France. Dans le Paris du XVème siècle, Esméralda, jeune gitane d'une grande beauté, danse sur la parvis de Notre-Dame. Du haut de la cathédrale, l'archidiacre Frolo et le sonneur de cloches Quasimodo la contemplent et en tombent amoureux. Frolo veut alors faire enlever la belle, mais le capitaine de la garde, Phoebus, l'en empêche au dernier moment, et gagne ainsi l'amour d'Esméralda. La jalousie s'empare alors de l'archidiacre qui tue Phoebus et accuse...
