What was the Warring States Period of Chinese History?

From 434 BC to around 403 BC the various independent states of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty sat tight and consolidated their resources. What would follow over the next two centuries would be a near-constant state of war.

The seven states that would come to make up the Warring States Period in Chinese history fought one another relentlessly, often shifting alliances in any way that would suit them at the moment. Many of the smaller states that existed at the beginning of the period were wiped out or absorbed into the larger states. By the time the dust had settled only one state remained, one that many had considered to be the weakest when the period began.

It was a revolutionary time in what would become China, not only militarily, but architecturally, philosophically, and religiously as well. I'm glad you've decided to experience it in these exciting fictional accounts that mirror real-life events!

The Warring States

War looms in the land that will one day become China. Seven States battle for power and influence in the waning days of the Zhou Dynasty, and each of them wants to be the best.

The State of Wei is one, and in 403 BC Marquis Wen of Wei finally conquers the small state of Zhongshan by flooding it with the diverted Fan River.

His power stands unopposed. A ceremony of honor is called in the capital city of Luoyang; Wen's finally being recognized by the King of Zhou. Unfortunately two other states are as well, and these Three Jins must now stand on an equal footing. Must, that is, until the peaceful balance is uprooted and the Seven States start down a path of war.

This dazzling novel will thrill young and old alike. Historical fiction has never been more mesmerizing - more alive! - and the people and places of China have never felt closer. Discover the ancient origins of China like you've never before - read The Warring States today!

The State of Chu

Frustrated with the direction the Army of Wei is taking following Marquis Wen's death, General Wu Qi leaves and finds himself in the struggling State of Chu.

Taking a low-level position in the state bureaucracy, Wu tries to start life anew, but is eventually noticed and brought to the attention of Duke Dao of Chu.

Not fearful of speaking his mind, Wu Qi suddenly finds himself tasked with changing the entire state, much to the chagrin of the corrupt and jealous nobles, who will do anything to keep their way of life.

The State of Qin

Qin is one of the weakest of the Seven States, and Duke Xiao knows it. Determined to restore the State of Qin to its former glory as one of the Five Hegemons during the reign of his ancestors, Duke Xiao sends an announcement for men of talent to aid him in strengthening Qin.

Wei Yang, a young scholar from the Legalist School, responds to the Duke's call, setting the State of Qin onto a course that will one day make it the country known as 'China.'
