...Emma is a comic novel by Jane Austen, first published in December 1815, about the perils of misconstrued romance. The main character, Emma Woodhouse, is described in the opening paragraph as "handsome, clever, and rich" but is also rather spoiled. Prior to starting the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like."
This special edition of Sense and Sensibility includes the famous illustrations by Charles Edmond Brock, created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Set in the developing seaside town of Sanditon, it portrays a young woman from the countryside who is exposed to the sophistication and cynicism of resort life. Her name is Charlotte. With disarming charm and wit, she observes for us the array of quirky characters who reside in the booming
...One abandoned, one unfinished, these short works show Austen equally at home with romance (a widowed clergyman with four daughters must needs be in search of a husband or two in The Watsons) and with social change (a new, commercial seaside resort in Sanditon). Typically touching, funny, charming and sharp.
Jane Austen's complete works form an enduring literary legacy that has captivated readers for generations. Her novels, characterized by wit, social commentary, and insightful character portrayals, offer a profound exploration of the societal norms and constraints prevalent during the Regency era in England. Austen's keen observations and astute critiques of the limitations imposed on women, particularly in matters of love and marriage, make her
..."Emma," one of Jane Austen's most beloved novels, published in 1815, introduces readers to the spirited and well-intentioned but often misguided heroine, Emma Woodhouse. Set in the early 19th century in the fictional village of Highbury, the novel revolves around Emma's penchant for matchmaking and her journey of self-discovery.
At the heart of "Emma" is the titular character's desire to arrange advantageous marriages for her friends
