What does a self-portrait tell us about the artist? Readers are invited to find out in this unique addition to Dover's popular Art Library Series. Drawings in pen, ink, and charcoal, as well as etchings and engravings, encompass 45 splendid self-portraits. Subjects range from such 15th-century artists as Gentile Bellini, Leonardo da Vinci, and Albrecht Dürer to a host of 19th-century masters: James Whistler, Auguste Rodin, Vincent van Gogh, Berthe...

This little book is the result of an attempt by a painter of modest talent to study master artists by copying their self-portraits. Painting the portraits and producing the book was enjoyable and, I believe, illuminatin. I would recommend the exercise to other painters, particularly young artists, as a way to learn about the great artists, their styles and techniques of painting, and of their works more generally. The exercise may be humbling and...

Self-Portraits of the Apocalypse: Shelter-in-Place 2020 started out as a drawing journal on my blog to help keep my head above water when coronavirus lockdown began. It became an illustrated journey through dealing with isolation during a pandemic. While my world burned, I wrote and made digital art cartoons about coping mechanisms, COVID (of course), Black Lives Matter, depression, literal near drowning, my apocalypse wardrobe, and hope.

As I said in my first self-portraits book, copying master self-portraits gives the young or amateurish painter the illusion of knowing and painting like the masters themselves. It doesn't matter if the result in each case is superficial and plagiaristic. It gets the copier closer to the subjects copied and is a delightfully pleasant exercise. It may even improve the copier's technical ability.
In a general sense, merely looking at master painters'...

For the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, brought together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. The exhibition displayed more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th-century artists who portrayed...

The Acetate Diary Series encompasses four collaborative films made in the wake of a serious car collision. The films, which include Blood on the Window, Broken Jaw, On Surgery, and Acetate Diary (which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival) are simultaneously documents of trauma and stunning self-portraits. By exploring abstraction, these films work to express the complex and often obtuse mental and physical ramifications of bodily trauma.

Jelena’s Song is an elegantly structured visual and sonic poem about the transformative power that emerges from an artist’s journey through memory and the rituals of everyday life. Like memory itself, the film gathers fragments of images, freeze frames, faded family photographs and youthful photo-booth self-portraits, journals, poetry, an evocative sound design and the simple honesty of Jelena’s voice into a lyrical tapestry that reconstructs...

The art of Frida Kahlo is like a ribbon around a bomb - Andre Breton. Frida Kahlo is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary and radical artists of the 20th century. This excellent film, directed by Ella Hershon and Roberto Guerra for RM Arts and Channel 4, was made in 1983 as a celebration of her life. The narrative begins and ends at her 'Blue' house in Coyoacan, Mexico City, where Kahlo spent much of her life. At her death in 1954 her husband,...

Many of Sam Taylor-Wood's distinctive photographs and films depict an affluent and fashionable social scene. But her concerns are often isolation and anxiety, conflict and alienation. Her art is alluring and disarming, and also frequently formally inventive. She uses multiple screens, still images combined with sound, and complex interior views conjured up with a panoramic camera. Among her earliest photographs are confrontational and sexually charged...

Art that was "headbuttingly impossible to ignore" is how Charles Saatchi describes the work that intrigued him as he started to collect British art in the early 1990s. Damien Hirst's giant shark in formaldehyde, Tracey Emin's unmade bed and a chilling portrait of Myra Hindley by Marcus Harvey are among the artworks that have since become icons of the decade. The Saatchi Gallery, now in the former County Hall in London, is a permanent home for a changing...
